Bass Lessons in Tacoma
Bass is the foundation of the band—connecting rhythm, harmony, and groove. At Tacoma Jazz Academy, our bass instructors help students develop strong technique, time, feel, and musical understanding through the study of jazz, improvisation, music theory, and great repertoire.
Whether you play electric or upright bass, are picking up the instrument for the first time, or are an experienced bassist looking to grow, instruction is tailored to your goals and experience. Students build the listening skills, rhythmic confidence, and harmonic understanding needed to play creatively with others, with opportunities to put those skills into practice through ensembles, jam sessions, and performances.
Why study bass at Tacoma Jazz Academy?
Great bass players do more than play the right notes. They understand how rhythm and harmony work together, listen closely to the musicians around them, and know how to support and shape the music as it unfolds.
Our approach develops the complete musician. Students work on technique and repertoire while also building strong time, ear training, harmonic understanding, improvisation, and the skills needed to play confidently with other musicians. Jazz provides the foundation for this work because it teaches bassists not simply what to play, but how to listen, respond, and make musical decisions in the moment.

Private Bass Lessons
Private lessons give students the opportunity to work one-on-one with an experienced instructor and focus on their individual goals. Our bass faculty teach both electric and upright bass, working with students at a range of experience levels and musical backgrounds.
Lessons are tailored to each student while maintaining a strong foundation in musicianship. Depending on the student's goals, instruction may include technique, reading, ear training, walking bass lines, groove and time, harmony, improvisation, and repertoire. The goal is not simply to learn songs, but to develop the skills and understanding needed to become a confident, independent musician.
Playing With Other Musicians
Bass is an instrument built for collaboration. Developing as a bassist means learning how to listen, lock in with a rhythm section, support a soloist, and make musical decisions in real time.
At Tacoma Jazz Academy, students have opportunities to take what they learn in private lessons into ensembles, jam sessions, and performances. These experiences help students develop stronger time, confidence, communication, and musical instincts while becoming part of a community of musicians who learn and play together.

Meet our bass instructors
Our bass instructors are active musicians and experienced educators who bring real-world performance experience into every lesson. Students learn from teachers who understand the role of the bass from the bandstand—not only how to develop technique, but how to listen, communicate, and contribute musically in an ensemble.

Tony LeFaive
Bass Instructor
Tony Lefaive is a bassist, guitarist, educator, and active member of the Pacific Northwest music scene. He began playing guitar at age ten, teaching himself to improvise and write songs before later expanding to upright and electric bass. Tony studied Jazz and Improvised Music at the University of Washington, completing both his undergraduate and Master’s degrees while performing and teaching throughout the Seattle area.
As an instructor, Tony encourages students to develop their own musical voice, combining strong fundamentals with improvisation, creativity, and exploration of the music that inspires them.
Build skills you can use
Bass lessons at Tacoma Jazz Academy connect technique and theory directly to the music students want to play. Students develop their fretboard knowledge, time, harmony, reading, improvisation, and repertoire while learning how those skills function in real musical situations.
Exercises like the progressive arpeggio series below are designed to build practical musicianship—not simply technique in isolation. As students progress, lessons are adapted to their experience, musical interests, and individual goals.
